The mechanism of this pencil is similar to those described in roughly a dozen patents of varying origin in the late 19th century. The innovation of this one is the hook at the end of the long tail of the wedge, allowing the lead to be retrieved easily if broken. In some of the other similar friction clutch mechanisms the inventors seem to have overlooked this essential feature.
