From Engineering Drawing; 6th Ed.; 1941; Thomas E. French.

Thomas French's book is a classic. The first edition was published in 1911. I'm not sure in which edition the following excerpt originally appeared, but almost certainly it predates my 1941 edition. Mr. French, I must warn you, is a blasphemer. He does not recognize the existence of leadholders, let alone their superiority over lowly disposable pencils. His remarks, however, can be generally applied to all drafting pencils.
